>>>FIRST THOUGHTS
In the May 25 issue of the New York Times, Andrew C. Revkin described the latest exploration craze (after Mount Everest), the North Pole. “At the place where all is south, where all time zones converge, where a year has one day and one night, where you have to take a step every 15 seconds or so to remain in one place, there is no permanent thing except the ocean floor.  And it is so far under the ice that 10 Empire State Buildings could be stacked without breaking the surface.

Revkin quotes Jim Osse, a marine engineer and diver from the University of Washington, Seattle, Wash. “You read those books when you’re up here, about Peary and those guys, and it does kind of cheapen this experience,” he said.  “Twenty-four hours from Seattle I’m on the Arctic icecap.  Some people might think it’s rather bold and daring, but these days all exploration is kind of forced, finding things to create a challenge because living doesn’t require much challenge.”
